Israel rejected UN peacekeepers on the border with Egypt and threatened to invade Syria. Given Israel's 1956 attempt to steal the Sinai from Egypt, Nasser had to take those threats seriously. He had to prepare for the Israeli invasion, though he obviously did not prepare enough.
