The Internet, as such, aka ARPANET, was invented in 1962 by DARPA, which is American.

Researchers at CERN in Switzerland invented HTML, without which no WWW.

If, like me, you were connected to the cutting bleeding edge of commercial Internet in the early 1980's, using Unix on a black-and-white or green-and-white monitor, you'd never confuse the WWW and the Internet.

BTW, I had no idea I was at the cutting bleeding edge of commercial Internet use, it was furnished gratis to our law school, and seemed very inadequate to me at the time, and I complained a lot.

But then, I still am not happy about not being able to access WiFi wherever I go.
