The Jordanians had just removed the problem from the East side of the Green Line, by removing all the Jews. The Israelis just moved the line of the problem eastward. And they all are Israeli citizens, right? 20% of Israel is Arab... Thus, what's your problem with all of the Jewish settlers on the West Bank becoming Palestinian citizens? And don't tell me "but they will be a minority and not be treated equally,..." That rings pretty hollow given the second class status Arabs "enjoy" in a JEWISH state. The Israelis just moved the line of the problem eastward. Yeah... all the way to the Jordan river.. But Israel missed its opportunity to force the evacuation of the West Bank and to annex it back in 1967, or to integrate the Palestinian population into Israel proper. Now they have to deal with the mess that exists, if they really want peace and security. They can't build walls around indefensible settlements, creating dozens of little "west berlins" in hostile territory, with no means of securely supplying them. You and I don't disagree that intransigent Arab leadership in Palestine has been the primary problem. But the "reality on the ground" is that no one, even a Palestinian, would be willing to live in a country where another country is able to divide it into segments and population blocs. Let the Jews living in Palestine be given that choice... Stay and become Palestinians, or move back to Israel. And if they become Palestinians, they must swear loyalty to that government. And demand international participation to ensure that the kind of government which emerges in Palestine is democratic and respectful of ALL human rights. Not the current autocratic, corrupt, and incompetent regime that currently exists. And that will mean openly confronting Hamas and other militant groups which have no tolerance of Jews and creating political and social "buffers" between the groups.. And that is simply something that Israel is not positioned to achieve. Only the international community can do this. After all, Palestine is being created by international mandate. And the international community has a responsibility, and a direct interest, in ensuring that the Palestine that they create is a peaceful and tolerant nation. And we all know that this will take time, considerable nation building, and patience. And it why your plan, or even that of Sharon, will not achieve either the peace or security that you both desire. All it will do is further inflame Arab passions throughout the region. And it will be left to the US to deal with it. And that will require tremendous expenditure of American blood and treasure. All because Israel decided to illegally settle occupied territory that it failed to annex. Hawk
