Edit- I don't use Norton Anti-Virus 2004 Pro so I really can't give an opinion, but it really gets bad user reviews on Amazon. You might want to check out what the user comments say about it.

Marty,

I am also running Norton AV 2004 Professional and I sometimes see the notification scan pop-up but not always. It seems to me that on a small e-mail I don't see it but if it is a long e-mail or has attachments then I do see it. It may be that on a regular small e-mail that the scan happens so quick that the window doesn't get a chance to pop up.

Try sending a short e-mail and then a long one with attachments and see if you notice this.
