You know I'm very lucky, my dad and I got to talk a lot as he lay dying- and he told me how proud he was of me. Dad really had a huge part in shaping my life by shaping my early reading. He gave me my first copy of Eric Hoffer's the True Believer when I was 14- ditto for Marcus Aurelius' meditations. He started me on the road to reading all of Bertrand Russell - giving me his favorite "Why I Am Not a Christian."

Dad was a stoic at heart, I think. He probably would have made a good Roman.

Funny thing, I was just reading a really good book by an Irish writer, the book is called the Untouchable- and the writer was talking about Seneca, in reference to a painting of the Death of Seneca (Nero, formerly tutored by Seneca has commanded Seneca to commit suicide)- and here's something I didn't know- Seneca was super wealthy (even though he preached austerity) and he got wealthy by money lending in Britain (and charging some outrageous interest rates) which probably led to the uprising. So the guy who expounded on austerity led to a revolt in Britain against capitalism :-)

There was a great PBS Masterpiece theatre on Queen Boadicea - I found it fascinating.
