What makes occupying territory legal or illegal? Does annexing the territory make a "legal" difference? What exactly does legal even mean in this context.

Jordan annexed that territory and would probably be ruling it today, had it not been King Hussein's foolish aggression in 1967.

Dayan probably had the right idea at that time.. annex the territory and kick the Palestinians out as an unmanageable enemy population... (after all Jordan annexed it in 1948).

But they didn't, and they permitted the status of the territory to remain undecided in hopes of achieving a peace treaty with Jordan.. And in the end, even Jordan gave up on the trying to manage the territory.

But Israel definitely had the right to occupy and annex the West Bank after being attacked by Jordan... They should have done so..

As for legality, possession is often 9/10th of the law, especially in the case of territory that was previous held by former empires.

But now the Israelis are in a spot. They can't manage or govern the territories they captured, and they can't afford to have a "peace" which results in creating a perpetually hostile, balkanized nation on their borders..

Because neither the US, nor the Israelis can prevent attacks by people willing to blow themselves up for their causes.

And there is going to come a time when they guys are going to get lucky and make both Israel and the US regret the day we fueled the fires of Islamic militancy by taking sides...
