Why ASML Is Best Positioned For 300mm Wafers
05.11.04, 12:50 PM ET

Credit Suisse First Boston said the key trend to monitor in the semiconductor capital equipment industry is the mix shift between 200mm and 300mm wafers. CSFB said ASML Holding NV (nyse: ASML - news - people ) "is best positioned to benefit from advanced capacity buys at 300mm" as its 193nm products have high average selling prices and are "well differentiated with the competition." The research firm said Applied Materials (nasdaq: AMAT - news - people ) and Axcelis Technologies (nasdaq: ACLS - news - people ) "have been big beneficiaries of 200mm as well as geographical mix," but could have more difficult comparisons in the second half of 2004 "as the mix shifts decidedly towards 300mm." KLA Tencor (nasdaq: KLAC - news - people ) "should benefit from a richer technology mix that drives increased spending on process control at 300mm than at 200mm," CSFB said. The firm said Novellus Systems (nasdaq: NVLS - news - people ) and Lam Research (nasdaq: LRCX - news - people ) will be hurt by a slowdown in capacity buys at 200mm but not to the extent of Applied Materials and Axcelis.
