One thing to watch with compost is your soil ph. It can get on the acid side but a little lime will take care of that.

I wouldn't use fresh manure close to the tomatoes, grow lots of vines and little fruit, too much nitrogen.


Thanks for the tips. BTW I am originally from Minnesota....still a city boy but been growing things since I was 6. I think my genes got all screwed up and was meant to grow up on a farm. <g>

Composted cow manure would be ok though. Now corn loves nitrogen. That's the fertilizer that's jumped this year.

Yes. I know.......that's why I wasn't surprised by the farmer's comments in the article. Could be he was having his way with the city boy journalist but they don't usually play that game in Oregon and the Pacific NW. FWIW.
