Frankly, nothing said here by anyone will make the slightest bit of difference to what does or doesn't happen in the ME. Like you said a while back (very wisely) these posts are just therapy for the posters, a little psych lab with a window where others can watch. The solution in the ME is for people to stop hating and killing, stop seeing life as a zero-sum game and reach a win-win compromise. How to get them there - probably impossible for outside powers to convince the haters to be any different. But the current debate is totally stale and futile, just more fingerpointing to justify more violence by one side or the other. Part of the reason I left my diplomatic career was a general disgust with the process; it is 99.9% babysitting Third World Screwups (both benign incompetents and malicious SIBs) and arguing trivia with our allies. Rarely accomplishes much if anything. Perhaps our Crusade in Iraq will remind Americans how foolish such quixotic ventures really are. But they could have just listened to Kipling and not tried to "hustle the East" this time at all. The East always wins, usually to its own detriment.
