I know sign is acceptable in our district- and I'm against it- because cochlear implants and related technologies are going to make the deaf "community" obsolete (and thank goodness for that- that is a good thing). I've never bought in to disabilities making people "communities"- i'm glad the people with the disabilities felt proud (when there was nothing medicine could do for them) but now that the disability can be fixed, it makes no sense to cling to the crutch.

I want the kids in our district learning Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and Russian- not sign.
