The Israeli forces again battled Palestinians outside the town of Beit Lahia as part of an operation to stop Palestinian rocket fire. The attacks intensified on Sunday, the day after the Israelis killed Dr. Abdel Aziz Rantisi, the leader in Gaza of the militant Islamic movement Hamas. The Gaza fighting left five Palestinians dead on Tuesday, and after a calm night the clashes resumed early Wednesday in the same manner. Large groups of Palestinian youths threw stones and were joined by young men firing automatic rifles, antitank rockets and grenades at the Israeli forces, the military said. The fighting reached the outskirts of a large housing complex, trapping several thousand Palestinians. Israel said its troops returned fire at the armed Palestinians but did not have details on casualties. The military said that the Palestinians had not fired rockets from the area since the Israeli operation began. The nine dead Palestinians included five gunmen, Palestinian hospitals and rescue workers said, and a 15-year-old boy was among those killed. About 25 Palestinians were wounded, according to hospitals. The Palestinian rocket fire, which included 15 volleys on Sunday and Monday, and the clashes over the past two days have marked some of the most serious fighting in weeks. Despite Israel's superior firepower, many Palestinians said they were intent on attacking the troops after the killing of Dr. Rantisi on Saturday and his predecessor, Sheik Ahmed Yassin, on March 22, also by a helicopter missile strike in Gaza City. "They killed Sheik Yassin and assassinated Rantisi,'' said Asraf Jabali, 19. "They are trying to destroy us." Mr. Jabali, who said he was throwing stones when was shot in the leg, was being treated at Al Awada Hospital. He normally works as a vegetable seller but said he could not resist joining the clashes when Israeli forces came near his community. "By throwing stones at them,'' he said, "I feel like I am taking revenge." nytimes.com
