Afghanistan is unfortunately at the edges of imperial ambitions.

In the 19th Century, the Great Game was the expansion of British and Russian empires. Afghanistan was invaded by the British in the First Afghan War in 1839. 17,000 armed troops and three times that number of camp followers entered Afghanistan in the hope of taming the tribes there. By the summer of 1842, the sole surviving soldier walked back out to India, unarmed.
