The reason why is because most people don't see our government for what it really is. All this bickering amongst politicians is just a dog and pony show. The government is just a reflection of the interests of the wealthiest segments of our society. It is their policies that the Democrats and Republicans ultimately implement. Huge budget deficits benefit the wealthy tremendously, which is one of the reasons the pols don't mind running up huge deficits (it's all part of the program of the Republicans to feed their wealthy benefactors and starve future social spending).

Of course, since even wealthy elites are human, there is a difference of opinion in exactly how government policy should be implemented, which is why we have the Ds and Rs. But, ultimately their aim is to serve their wealthy masters and ensure their wealth is maintained and grows. Just look at our foreign policy over the past 40 years. I mean rarely has the U.S. acted out of altruism in our foreign policy (Somolia perhaps, Bosina was more about maintaining our sphere of influence). More often than not our foreign policy is dictated by the interests of big business and the wealthy who control big business.
