Fine, but what about the following, MQ: You see the process clocking away at eugenic / generational clock. While at the same time the human race an an organism is going supercritical. We're undergoing a phase transition - amorphous spinterized glass, supercool (ie below Tc) bozonic liquid, ionic/anaemic crystal, take your pick.

<But the horsepower in our heads has NOT been finely tuned. Or even coarsely tuned. The difference between the smartest humans and the average is huge. It's not just a small gap. It's very large. The brainpower is contained in the same wet chemistry, but the function is very, very different.>

LOL, what is your definition of "using brainpower"... please explain? I believe swingin from trees lights your brain up like an X-mas tree compared to the dim response you get from sitting on your computer reading... or thinking about the future of CDMA. You taking about the frontal cortex only, or what?

<So, if the smartest 5% get to do more reproducing over a few generations, and the bottom 20% miss out on having grandchildren, you can see that over 500 years, we could get several standard deviations of IQ improvement.>

LOL... please explain "smart"?

<Hey presto, we get up on our hind legs, keep our fur trimmed and tidy, wash off some of the bear smell which is our natural odour [pong] and try to speak nicely like real gentlemen.>

Getting warm... ie. clubbing other males over the head and running off with the girl. Sounds like a premium on the "old brain" no?

<Nature, and women, are merciless! There's no room for the inadequate.>

Exactly.... no room for fat ass computer geeks, they'll never get laid. Give your kid a football or basketball and start counting up the grandchildren!

<But we have brains to keep us on the straight and narrow and control our emotions with applied intelligence.>

Ass backwards, the more control you need to exercise the more wasted energy that could be used naturally rather than covering up your emotions. Anxiety up, chance of procreating down. Sorry.

BTW... everyone is different {duhh}, you may want to check out what type you are:

dadamo.com

Maybe your ARE meant to put all your energy into your ass sitting at the computer?

as long as much of the world remains a welfare state, the genetic advantage goes to those who can procreate the most while using the least amount of resources (meaning other people's resources) to support their progeny. not as simple as "smart people get to reproduce more because they are more desired"
