Vietnam should never have been escalated into a full-scale war. When Johnson lied to the American People about the Gulf of Tonkin attack (never happened as the Pentagon papers proved, see how valuable whistle-blowers are?) he sinned the same way Cheney-Bush did lying about WMD's. Nixon continued Johnson's lies and just as we have now, it turned into a terrible costly quagmire with no end or victory in sight. Back when we took over for the French with JFK was prez we were actually winning, using Green Berets and tribal forces guerilla style.
