I think the militant fringe had gone to far in the Palestinian territories to expect any sort of peace in the near future. And few nations will be willing to spend money building a Palestinian state, just to hand it over to the militants. Which is one of the reasons that I opined that a international security presence was necessary in order to battle the militant factions, while giving any existing (and intimidated) moderates a chance to voice their alternatives. As for leaving the settlements where they are, in principle you're right... Why not just give them the choice of moving back to Israel (of course the US would probably help pay for it), or becoming Palestinian citizens.. But that isn't going to work without an outside presence that demands that any Palestinian state that is formed by international "fiat" is tolerant of a Jewish minority in its midst. The militant power within the PA is just too great, IMO and Israel would quickly find itself having to invade in order restore security for these settlers. The reality is that Israel probably needs to continue building their wall, adjust its borders north and south of Jerusalem, and smoothing out some other spots and just try and isolate themselves from the Palestinians. I just think it's ludicrous for Sharon to advocate maintain already highly vulnerable settlements that effectively surrounded by a sea of hostile Palestinians. That's nothing more than an invitation for continued attacks, Israeli retaliation, and further upwelling amongst radical Arab youth in support of attacking these settlements. Btw, it's great to have you reading and participating in this thread.. I've missed your presence. Hawk
