Albert, According to the Soviet military folks I talked to, they regarded Afghanistan as their Vietnam. So, Afghanistan and Vietnam are both backwater countries, but important for their psychological value. And you should remember that the weakness in Afghanistan gave the Chinese the idea they could shoot Soviet border troops with impunity, which turned out to be correct.

And Carter's work helping defeat the Soviets in the Middle East was certainly a Cold War positive. And a big step up after Republican surrenders in Korea and Vietnam.
