The Japanese had a nasty habit of fighting to the death. On Tarawa, 17 out of 4836 Japanese survived the battle. On Iwo Jima, virtually all 22K Japanese were killed. At Guadacanal, they started out with 37, 680; 9100 were evacuated, 28,750 estimated dead. On Okinawa, there were 110,000 killed, 7400 taken prisoner.
