If it only could be so, but no, markets work remorselessly as the tide and without regard to the welfare of the grains of sand on the shore.

Before this is over, debt shall be expanded, leverage shall be maximized, physical and financial asset prices shall grow from their current minuscule levels and the stage will generally be set to separate all but the most conservative from the product of half a lifetime's labors.

Of course, I was talking recently to my wife's grandfather, who was born in 1908. I asked him what he remembered of the Great Depression. He answered, "I remember men selling apples on the street and I remember buying a 4 story brownstone in mid-town Manhattan for cash in 1948."
