I'm not defending the burning of books in Alexandria. I just said it was a poor analogy to use.

Yes i know you weren't defending burning books ...but then again it is only a part-event of the litany of historical processes that ensued back then of destruction of evidence . How do you know you would not be one of those that would have gladly helped demolish , gut , & burn down all those pagan temples or their literature back then ? Can you see yourself resisting the mob mentality? Would your humanism, deep faith devoted to the live and let live morality (turn the other cheek) enforce the princely austere higher path ?

It was not only the Christians that systematically practice this art of elimination , but not surpisingly the later Muslim jhiads pretending to be holy , following along side the Christian "dumber than dumb" Crusades... a distinctly similar pattern of destroying anything that seemed to contradict the "Holy Books".

Bad analogy Greg ...or you choose not to see the analogy because it is too obvious ? Certainly it would be better off if we all lived as ascetics.... But we were talking of "historicity and the great salvation of that scholarship emanates from the secular , humanist & natural sciences digging thru the ruins and conspiracy , and discovering what was real. authentic and what was fantasy . And when you merge science with religion , then you have discovered the greatest faith and revelation of all...beyond even the most wildest utopian tribal dream of the Rabbai Jesus . Though now its more obvious than ever , that all men are brothers.

Try looking into these fellow's eyes here in Iraq , and you will see pretty much what many of your Christian leadership & forbear's countenance looked like . Don't go preaching or trying to convert anyone today over on their turf today ,
i would warn you :
iraq.net

As soon as we are gone , they'll turn on each other .

... Sunni against Shiite, leaving the moderates & humanists once again in the middle of the fundamentalist's buzzsaw . Humanists make great saints too.

And another point quickly comes to mind , is its not whether you choose to defend or not defend any act or former event and those actions or inactions.

What you believe is everything , and that is just the point. It is pretty much a fact that "believers" have wrested the minds of man for so many long centuries , but there were barabarians with which to defend (other believers) . Better consider deeply just what it is you "believe" then and what you would choose to martyr yourself for , but separate that from the "historical" please .

Any sane person , or believer would still, thank heaven for science , unless there was too many things left still to hide.
