"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is the directive of Jesus
This can (and often is) interpreted to mean that your actions should conform to your own ideals. This can include forcing your ideas upon others through missionary work.

That is absolutely the truth , the whole truth and nothing but the truth . Amen .

When as the story goes Peter draws his sword at the garden of Gethsemane cutting off the ear of the head Mucky~muck's manservant upon Jesus arrest .... it is "revealed" in one great blinding~divine flash we realize that the entire time he had spent listening to the Son of God , he wasn't really getting any of it at all ? How could he have witnessed all those miracles and walking on the water himself, the Sermon on the Mount and the Transfiguration on the other Mount, and all that the Son of God would have instructed him one on one ....and at the very last still draw his sword and try and kill someone ?

The gospels are great storytelling , but its hard to believe that just the week before Jesus was humbly washing all these fellows feet @ the last supper clearly showing them the way , and still Peter fails to get his head around the concept , running off as fast as his feet can carry him with the other "disciples" , denying thrice he ever knew a man called Jesus !

And then only after 50miles of running as fast as they could , the risen Jesus catches up with all of them in a blinding flash of "revelation" & resurrection . This is great stuff & storytelling , and Jim Thorpe and many Olympians this summer in track and field will be amazed at how far and how fast these worthy disciples ran away !

Back to the point , Evangelist Christianity never gets it until 2000 yrs later , that what they are practicing in their preaching is "WAR" . Cultural vilolent war made on any they happen to wish to conquere and absorb . From Peter on , the die was cast . Very few understood the subtle levels of any of it from the start , though any common man or pagan could have told them of wanting peace....and everyone wants to live forever in the land of milk and honey.

Instead Peter drew the sword , and the rest is history.

( I've often asked "Christians" why they have never incorporated a beautiful foot-washing ceremony/ritual throghout the entire spectrum of sects ....seems simply one of the most endearing acts their "messiah" did , at the precious last days ... would seem a lovely ritual of humility and to remember him by , jmho.

but suppose feet were too stinky in the Dark Ages, and priests wouldn't want to get their hands dirty ?)
