The blogs are keeping score: April 24, 2004 Daschle Attacks! See this post from local radio show host Greg Belfrage, who notes Daschle's new phone calling campaign saying that Thune is responsible for new TV ads which criticize Daschle (you know, the ones where Daschle's lawyers sent threatening letters to local TV stations--yes, once again, that champion of free speech Tom Daschle). Belfrage notes that Thune can't, by law, contact these other groups and lays down a challenge: So here it is... I'm challenging the Daschle campaign to provide proof of collaboration... or apologize for these misleading statements. Make no mistake. Dan Pfeiffer is accusing Thune of violating the spirit, if not the letter, of federal election law. When you consider the negative telephone solicitations currently aimed at Thune...the strategy of the Democrats becomes clear. Watch the "Letters to the Editor" pages of your local newspaper. I guarantee you'll see these bogus charges of "third party collaboration" trumped up in one phony letter after another. Of course, most of the state media will be only too happy to repeat these false allegations without challenging them. Sibby says "It is the Daschle campaign that is creating the negative atmosphere of the 2004 Senate race by making false allegations designed to paint it’s opposition as being 'negative.'" Let's keep track of this: third party groups who have nothing to do with Thune ran ads critical of Daschle so Daschle's response is to attack Thune using television ads and automated phone dialers as being responsible. Sounds to me like a negative attack from Daschle! Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, and other conservatives want Frist to counter Daschle by bringing the business of the Senate to a halt. Daschle is against the prospect of a Senate debate. [Pennsylvania Senator Rick] Santorum has urged doctors all over the country to write checks supporting Daschle's opponent in the upcoming election. "I guarantee that at least one million dollars will come in from trial lawyers against me in my next election," Santorum said. Seems like something the Argus should, in the interest of the democratic process, report. daschlevthune.typepad.com
