That's nice...the Germans are forgiving some debt, and they are willing to train some police...

But you know that Schroeder's opponent in the election was using relations with the US as an issue against Schroeder. That made it in Schreoder's interest to speak with Bush. Basically Schroeder is paying lip service to Bush, without any commitments.

Schroeder is walking a political tight rope at home, where many are upset over bad relations with the US, but at the same time polls indicate that Bush is not trusted by the German people. Schroeder cracked open the door to keep the critics happy, but only cracked it as the electorate still does not trust Bush.
