Kerry's position 'very similar to ours': Downer
April 25, 2004

Australia would work well with the United States regardless of whether George W Bush or John Kerry won this year's US presidential election, the Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, said today.

He refused to say who he would prefer to see win the presidential race on November 2, saying it was a matter for the American people.

However, Mr Downer said that despite the Australian Government's close association with the Bush Republican administration, it would work well with a Kerry Democrats administration.

"I think either way we'd get on very well with them," he told the Ten Network.

"We certainly essentially support much of what Senator Kerry has to say about Iraq.

"I mean, when it comes to an issue like that his position is very similar to ours.

"We know a lot of the people, of course, in the higher echelons of the Democratic party because we worked with the Clinton administration.

"We just don't get into whether we would prefer one or the other, that's a matter for the American people."
