Gulf countries warn Israel on Arafat

Riyadh, , Apr. 25 (UPI) -- The Arab Gulf countries Sunday warned Israel against harming Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and called on the international community to stop Israel.

The six-member Gulf Cooperation Council's Secretary General Abdul Rahman al-Atiya called on the U.N. Security Council to "take speedy measures to stop the threats" of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon against the life of Arafat.

He said in a statement that "silence on these threats will encourage Sharon to commit more of his crimes against the Palestinian people and their national leaders."

The GCC -- Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates -- was reacting to recent comments by Sharon that he has reneged on a promise he made to the U.S. administration not to target the life of Arafat.

Meanwhile, a high-level Palestinian delegation headed by Prime Minister Ahmad Qureia arrived in the Cairo, Egypt, to discuss the latest Israeli threats against Arafat.

He told reporters in Cairo before meeting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak that the Israeli threats were "dangerous and shocking because Israel gives itself the right to issue threats against Palestinian leaders openly."
