I agree. I'm not sure why we even compare Vietnam to Iraq. I've tried to avoid it. But the reason that service in Vietnam was generally limited to 1 year was because there was a draft during the Vietnam conflict.

Given the current situation, it should be clear that there aren't enough troops to support all the military actions that we are currently engaged in on a continuing basis.

You've got choices. Continue with the current approach of extending tour duty and using the Guard; start up the draft; or permanently increase troop levels. If I remember correctly, 30,000 troops costs $5B/year to maintain.

I don't expect that the draft will get started up again.
