I think Powell's position was complicated by his son being chairman of the FCC.

The younger Powell has had a pretty solid career (and is one of the few sons of a major politician to have served in the military), but it would still have been awkward if the elder Powell had a serious falling out with the Bush admin while Michael held a senior position in it.

I expect Mike will make the jump back to private practice when this term is over.
