Hi Soros. I think you're one of the most honest conservatives I see posting on these boards - telling it like you see it, not what the party line says - and I respect your views.

I have no delusions about what the majority may think - I'm stating my views as I see them. I just think that the majority, if it is such, is WRONG. There is also a difference between "unlimited" rights, and supporting progressive ideas with boundaries - which is more my position. The nutty right wing media has successfully portrayed us otherwise to the mushrooms. I came out of a somewhat conservative midwest area. When I moved west, I initially had gut reactions and biases against gays - and, I'm happily married. After working around many gays for many years, I've seen how wrong that is. Many are the nicest, least b.s., good honest people. They represent no threat to me, and what they do in private is their own damn business.

I have no doubt that if many of the conservative folks spent time where I live, their views would modify as they came to see the positive aspects of open mindedness and acceptance of others who are different from what makes them comfortable. Life is so much better this way than with rigid rules parroted from previous generations.

If this is the position of that group : "so the perception in middle America was not that abortion is always just a form of birth control for the undisciplined and overly-sexed, and modify their gay rights position to not allow abuse of people but not give the impression that being gay is EQUAL to being black or being Catholic or being blind" -- then what needs to be changed is the distorted perception, not our views.

Though I don't expect to change a lot of minds, I don't see pretending that my open minded views should be toned down politically to win wide blocks of votes - just enough to ensure that the likes of bush don't inhabit the halls of power.

cheers.
