WTH is Goo?

"Grey goo". One of the paranoid doomsday scenarios of how our world might be in deep... uh... "goo" one day.

It goes like this: Us humans produce self-assembling tiny robots (nanobots) which then go on to produce billions of replicas of themselves. Everything gets covered in this grey goo. Life as we know it ends.

There was a good article written by Bill Joy (coofounder of Sun Microsystems, and its chief scientist when he wrote this) in Wired that caused a lot of controversy in the year 2000, where he explained quite a bit how and why grey goo could be a serious threat:
