Palestinians protest Sharon's threat to Arafat
By ASSOCIATED PRESS

In mass demonstrations Sunday, Palestinians warned Israel that if carried out its threat to harm their leader Yasser Arafat, they would revive the border infiltration war they waged in 1960s, '70s and '80s.

"With our souls and blood, we redeem you, Arafat," chanted some 5,000 supporters of the Palestinian leader in the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp near the southern Lebanese city of Sidon. About 2,500 Palestinians staged a similar protest in the nearby Mieh Mieh refugee camp.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Friday he was no longer bound by a commitment to the United States not to harm Arafat. The remark drew criticism from America and Britain, and Egypt and the Arab League secretary general warned Israel not to kill Arafat.

An Israeli assassination of Arafat would be "a crime that cannot be forgiven," Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said Saturday.

One of the placards carried by the Ein el-Hilweh demonstrators said: "Harming President Arafat will bring the pendulum back to 1965." It was a reference to the year when Arafat's Fatah movement launched its guerrilla war against Israel along the borders of Lebanon and Jordan.

"Any harming of Commander Arafat will jolt the entire region, put an end to all (peace) agreements and understandings (with Israel)," said Khaled Aref, Arafat's representative in Ein el-Hilweh.

Ein el-Hilweh is home to about 75,000 people, mostly Palestinians who were displaced in the 1948-49 war that led to the creation of Israel and their descendants. It is the largest of 12 refugee camps in Lebanon that house a total of about 350,000 Palestinians.
