Taking off from flight school in Opa Locka, we used to form up northwest of Hialeah and fly down the drainage canals with our planes below the top of the tree lines. I was second in line one morning, and as we turned a 90 to the right to change canals the guy ahead of me scared a big real gator that was sunning itself. It sloshed its tail in the water to boogie, and I got my windshield washed...!!! Kinda cool at 120mph and about 10 feet off the water in a C-152.... Hey Mang, we were all bikers, 21+/-, and 'totally freakin' bulletproof' - don'cha know.

I flew in a P-51F dual-control, two-seater ("Paul II") with Paul Poberezny at EAA (Whitman Field) in Oshkosh one summer Saturday morning. He flew them in WW-II along with Bob Hoover and Chuck Yeager (whom I've also met). 60+/- minutes of boring holes in the sky, a 450mph pass down the centerline of the runway at about 20 feet AGL, and then 2 carrier-type landings will certainly get your adrenaline up. Like you said, there is only "..one sound.." - and that's a Merlin turning a 4-blader at full-tilt-boogie...!!!

There were some 'old' guys' who owned Waco's and built Pitts Specials up at Lauderdale Exec; they had some pretty cool stories. I used to watch Mary Gafney practive in her Pitts down at New Tamiami also.

The most fun for the cheap-buck in S. FL is flying 'Steermans' out of that small airport down in Homestead. Leather flying hats with rubber tubes in the ears run back to the instructors megaphone was the "..intercomm..". Turning a Steerman over onto its first guy-wire gives you a 2-minute turn, the second guy-wire gives you a 1-minute turn. That sure beats watching a stopwatch all to hell....!!! YeeeeeeeHaaaaaaaaaaaaaw - we go up-dee-up-up, we go down-dee-down-down.......

If Speedy really has any stones - he'll learn to fly...!!! I think he'd look (..almost..) kinda cool in one of those James Bond Magisters.

John :-)
