Lt Col Karen Kwiatkowski said in a radio interview I heard that the draft is a given if Bush is elected. She claims that volunteers have already been asked to man the draft boards around the country. SHe also said that Rumsfeld has already invoked the special powers.

I hope she is wrong cause I have an 18 year old son. Kwiatkowski has alot of credibility., She worked in the Pentagon and is a Republican conservative. She has knowledge of the Office of Special Plans and worked in one of the Under Sec of Defense's office I think.
Look her up on Google if you want a reference..........I have to go to bed cause I get up at 5 in the morning tomorrow.

Good night all and let's hope there is no draft........I will be in the streets for sure if that happens.

James, no hyperbole - in fact, the hiker was the guy's friend.

When police asked him why he shot his friend, he said, "we were hunting and I thought he was a deer." Police asked him, "did you know your friend was wearing a bright orange jacket." The guy's answer was, "yes."

An incident similar to this, would happen every year in the state I grew up in.

Quite dangerous, you could not go hiking during hunting season, which for me is a big deal. I need to be able to hike.

I think the govt finally decided to prosecute some of those cases because they kept happening over and over again - you no longer hear about that type of stuff anymore so maybe enforcement is working, but then again, I no longer live there.

As far as the farm owner - I'm familiar with this incident. The farmer was aware that unprotective clothing/mask could result in the death of a worker when entering a toxic gaseous tank (manure). Many workers (at other farms) were killed in a similar manner. The industry was ignoring the problem, so in this sense it is murder (knowingly not taking steps to prevent someone from dieing), not negligence (unknowingly).

Having said that, based upon the farmer's character (i.e. how well liked he was by his employees and how the entire industry - employees and employers alike - both felt the risk was part of the job, rather than thinking the risk needed to be minimized through protective clothing), so it probably would have been more appropriate if a court levied him a super huge fine. The court moved from a place of essentially no action to suddenly charging an owner with murder. There was no gradation.

So, the judicial system also had a role in this by not fining farmers a high enough figure in the first place so that the entire industry would take note and have the financial incentive to fix it. They waited until another person died. Not preventive. Not ethical.

There's a lot of things I like about California, and this is one of them. They tend to clean things up here.
