08:20 RFMD RF Micro Device: BofA sees upside from current levels (8.35 )

BofA Sec out on RF Micro Devices saying they believe that shares may trade up from current levels for two reasons. First, firm's checks indicate that the MarQ may come in slightly above consensus and that the JunQ is trending in line with expectations with positive order momentum. Second, there seems to be more upside than downside to their estimates for 2H05 from the Polaris II (EDGE RF) radios. While the timing and magnitude of these design wins is uncertain, the firm believes their estimates reflect only 30-40% of the potential outcome if Polaris II does indeed see solid design traction. Yet, intense pricing, commoditization of RF PAs, and short design cycles prevent BofA from raising their rating saying a design loss could severely impact profits given relatively fixed SG&A and R&D expense. Tgt goes to $10 from $12.

08:17 UTSI UTStarcom: Piper positive following strong PAS additions (29.15 )

Piper Jaffray out positive on UTStarcom saying record 9.6 MM PAS adds in Q104 represent the highest quarterly growth since 8.0 MM were added in Q303. Firms sees this as a positive for UTSI, which holds a 60% shares, representing 5.7 MM units sold against their forecast of 4.0 MM. Based on $60 ASP, this implies handset sales of ~$340 MM vs ~$310 MM in Q403. Although UTSI has already pre-announced revs of $600 MM and reaffirmed EPS of $0.38, in light of this news, and dependant upon PAS Systems sales, firm believes UTSI could easily report $5-$10 MM upside to sales and EPS of $0.39. UTStarcom reports Q104 results on Tuesday, April 27 th after the close.
