Frankly, IMHO when the election is over all talk of draft will END unless we get into another major conflict. Draft is NOT the answer so far as the armed forces are concerned. As I have reported earlier, draft doesnt bother me, I could easily argue for 100% required contribution but that wouldnt give us the finest military in the world. Only career soldiers can get the amount of training necessary to turn out a superb fighting force, especially today with all these electronic gadgets. jdn

Wooden ships, 2006 (they take a while to build). Brass cannon, 2007 (hard to find the brass smiths these days.)

And we just can't get the PIKES back until we develop a child-guard for them...

Dipy, I don't know. If rich Republicans' kids aren't excluded, Bush's going to have a tough time getting it past his masters, Rove and Cheney. Now we know the rich "patriots'" kids will be excluded, de facto, but most will want more assurances in case a Democrat accidentally sees a fair election some day.

The major problem is, 2 years won't hack it any more. The draft would have to be at least 4 years to make the training pay off in performance. Another problem is the Reserves and National Guard. Who the heck is going to join them now without a draft coercing them? If you want to go to war, you join the regulars. If you only want to go to war under extreme conditions, you can't find that in the National Guard and Reserves any more. It isn't Dubya's Champagne Guard nowadays.
