I think if they reinstate the draft, they should select the children of the powerful and wealthy first. Currently, only one child of an elected representative is serving.

Your response is interesting and adamant. Can you tell me why you feel so strongly?

You gave me a cognitive and an emotional response to the proposition of a draft reinstatement. I'll give you both a pragmatic and a philosophical answer to your question.

Before addressing that issue, I want to make clear that I feel immense respect and admiration for those who have chosen to join and serve in the military.

That being said, my pragmatic opposition to the draft is that a purely volunteer military acts as a natural brake on the ability of political entities to indulge in lengthy and/or unpopular conflicts around the globe. Current enlistment and re-enlistment numbers seem to reflect the views of a large portion of the electorate that our involvement in the Middle East is a worthy and worthwhile effort, indeed, that it furthers our national interest at the present time.

On a philosophical level, a draft is nothing other than slavery, pure and simple, no matter how it happens to be couched linguistically. As such, it is an evil concept and an anathema in a so called free society.

Vietnam and its aftermath put an end to the draft in the United States, and it should remain buried, IMO, forever...
