I submit to you the 700 billion over the last 12 months is wrong all by itself. To lump it with the jobs loss over the extended period is a matter of interpretation of the syntax.

Here are numbers projected for the current year - ugly - but not your number which is 40% higher than what would be a record. I do not have the time to find march through feb numbers - if you can show me that I will acknowledge a mistake. Also - please do not try to excuse a >40% error with a ~ sign.

President Bush says he will get the deficit under control
The US Federal budget deficit could reach $2.4 trillion over the next 10 years, $1 trillion more than previously estimated, official estimates said.
The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said that rising spending on health and tax cuts would boost the gap between tax revenue and spending.

This year the CBO projects a record budget deficit of $477bn, falling to $365bn by 2005 as the economy improves. ............................."
