JDN, No, I didn't read it that way. Landing on a carrier is a special skill reserved for Naval and Marine aviators. I believe GDubya flew from the co-pilot position ("..right seat..") enroute to get a little "..time-in-type.."; a very typical 't-h-a-n-g' among pilots. The actual aircraft commander ("..left-seater..") would be responsible at all times for the safe operation of the aircraft. cnn.com It's possible the GDubya maintained his right-seat position through landing, but I would think it was much more likely that the official crew actually put the bird on the deck. The Viking requires a crew of two, sitting side-by-side. "..Trapping.." (catching a tailhook wire) on a carrier is video-recorded and criticqued every single time. I don't think the S-3B flight crew would want to be responsible for a landing where one of them was technically absent from his post - with the CIC on board. It's certainly nice to have a sitting President with the cajones to make a 'carrier trap' - as opposed to being dropped on the deck by a SeaKing helicopter doing 'taxi' service, etc. OBTW: Sen. Barry Goldwater was "..checked-out.." in every plane in the Military inventory as I recall. Damn shame we didn't elect him as President, instead of ol' Flop-ears - the Demoncrat 'outhouse bombing planner' of Viet Nam. John :-) .
