I don't worry about the hardcore leftwingers; they are such a minority fringe in the Democratic party, they hardly register as a blip since McGovern discredited that segment. The Republican loonie right is much closer to the levers of power, eager to restrict liberties in the name of "freedom" and impose their righteous views on us all. Unfortunately, the politics of personal destruction are both effective and lethal for a sound political process. Ignore the attacks and you look weak - fight back and you look mean and defensive. Like all gross insults, I ignore the substance and the target and focus on what they tell me about the people making the charges. What I have seen so far in political ads speaks volumes - lame-ass distortions and attacks instead of positive statements about the incumbent's record and future plans. The rest is just Beltway bullshit for the sound-bite crowd.
