Apparently there are some moderates in the GOP, but I don't know enough about any of them or whether the Repubs would vote for any other than McCain in a primary.

I have always hoped that we would mobilize a real third party.

The nation has been ready for this. The meteoric rise of Ross Perot is the prime example. In a way, the press coverage, which I normally hate, was able to show that he really was a nut. Or maybe it was the Bush machine which leaked all the stories about him.

Nader could have been good, but his temperament and ego prevented that.

You know come to think of it, it's probably miraculous that the worst we've had is probably Nixon and his paranoid delusions. Bush is truly not qualified to be President but he rises or falls on what you think of his team. If you like them, they are brilliant, starting with Cheney, Rice and Powell and even Rumsfeld (interesting racial surprise for a supposed right wing idealogue.) If you hate 'em, then they are crazed, insane, etc., etc.,etc., and probably have Jewish roots <vbg>.

The Specter / Toomey race is an interesting bell weather for the republicans. Specter is described as a Rockefeller republican (although I believe Coulter called him a donkey trapped in an elephant's body). Bush jr came out to campaign for Specter, though, so that's probably a good sign for folks who want the republicans to be more moderate.

Hi Dale,

Re: Apart from McCain, who is on the horizon among Republican moderates we should be watching?

If you examine the McCain record, you'll soon realize that he is no moderate.

The other rising GHP star who the media is growing fond of is Senator Chuck Hagel (R. NE). He is certainly more centrist than a McCain, Santorum or Brownback.

However, there's a lot of baggage with his connections to Sequoia Voting Systems and the astonishing performance of Hagel in certain minority precincts in Nebraska in the 2002 election.
