Very well said, Hawkmoon. Reality is seldom pleasant.

It would be great if we could simply say, "Let's take this phenomenal sum of money we pay for defense, and tack on an additional enormous deficit spending effort to develop an alternative to oil." A lot of folks might even bless deficit spending if we could see something positive from it.

Unfortunately, it's too late for that now. Perhaps if we'd have done this years ago, we might be closer to that goal which would create less reliance on those who hate us. BUT, we now MUST direct our deficit spending to less productive, but necessary, uses now. Self preservation happens to be the most immediate need at the moment.

Someday when there is no oil, or we've been denied it, or we can't breathe because of its use, we may get serious about looking for other sources. That may enable us to disengage a bit from that part of the world and leave them to their own devices.
