Vietnam was necessary to slow down the spread of Communism. Those who argue it was not necessary would argue that WWII was not necessary as well. The collapse of USSR proved how effective that system was for the people it oppressed. Modern warfare is complicated because our enemies are cowards who choose to hide among civilians to protect themselves.

How do you protect your family & nation from those who have taken an oath to kill you, without using military action?
Don't answer diplomacy please. Fanatics do not respect negotiations...they are bullies and respect only force.

I'm old enough to have understood the problems during the Vietnam War, and actually lived in Laos during middle/high school vacations.
