The problem was that the people of South Vietnam wanted to be Communist. So, we had to kill them.

Kerry campaign loves it when Vietnam becomes the issue everyone is talking about. Bushies will think twice before they attack his war record again. LOL Now Bush has to explain the whole AWOl thing again (lying of course) and Cheney has to defend why he got five (count 'em) deferrments to avoid the draft.

Kenneth E. Phillipps. You said....." History shows that Viet Nam War was not necessary to stop communism. Communism stopped itself - both in the Soviet Union and China. "....

This is true But at the time in question what was occurring was not history. One would have had to know the future to be able to see what history would be in 2004. And if one could have done that then the war in Vietnam likely could have been avoided. If one could see the future like that then maybe all wars could be avoided.

Hindsight is great. ;-)

History shows that Viet Nam War was not necessary to stop communism. Communism stopped itself - both in the Soviet Union and China.

The pious folks who had fervently prayed for the demise of Communism will disagree with you. They will most probably insist that their prayers were answered and that was responsible for the fall of Communism! ROFLMAO!

As I was quite close to the fighting in Vietnam, let me say this:

Ever since the Cold War began soon after WWII, the Americans became self-appointed policemen of the world. They were also morbidly afraid of being overwhelmed by Communism, especially after Kruschev said during his visit to the States, "We will bury you," way back in late 1959 (or was it 1960?) when Eisenhower was the Prez. At that time one country after another in Asia and elsewhere fell into the Soviet orbit. Thus was born the Domino Theory. It was greatly feared that if Vietnam became totally communist, then the other countries of South-East Asia would inevitably fall like dominoes to Communism. So, Uncle Sam felt it had to act. And Uncle Sam went so far as to concoct the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1962 for an excuse to go to war against Vietnam. But really, it was to contain and to defeat Communism.

Unfortunately, the Vietnam War did not go well for the US.

It was a war nobody wanted and the folks at home in the US were unhappy about it. Eventually, after much wrangling and what not, Uncle Sam negotiated for an "honorable" way out.

Because the Soviets had helped the North Vietnamese in the 1960s and 1970s, Uncle Sam helped the Afghan Taliban against the Soviets in the 1980s. That was a tit for tat!

Nowadays folks say Iraq will become a new Vietnam for Uncle Sam. But I don't think so as the Iraqi insurgents are not supplied by a superpower. Their ammo will run out sooner or later. However, their resistance will remain strong by virtue of their fanaticism.

To conclude: IMHO, it's incorrect to say that Communism eventually died out on its own. Believe me: Uncle Sam did quite a lot of behind-the-scene sabotage work of one kind or another to bring about the Soviet collapse. Don't forget that advances in hi-tech, especially in the US, made it extremely hard for the Soviets to compete economically. Finally, after the Americans went a-kissing the Chinese ass, the Chinese were no longer as co-operative with the Soviets as in former times. In China, after Mao Tze-Tung was gone, the Chinese decided to veer towards Capitalism, and they have been doing extremely well. At least for now.......
