I joined the guard because i was in love . i was going to do two years in the service but figured going to night school three nights a week and putting in a computer system in work the military wouldn't be a benefit if i took two years away from my education. Instead i joined the guard. It was before any call up for physcial, never mind getting a draft notice and it was before i even heard the word Vietnam. and oh,, the guard was almost empty. They had a program earlier if you joined before age 18 you only served 2 and 1/2 years reserve duty. So when i joined many of the kids i went to high school with that joined were leaving.

does that help? I had friends go into Marines because their brother went in during Korea etc. We had one kid in the group join the Marines and next thing four others went down with him. Some guys joined the Army, others went off to college and a lot just went to work in local factory GE.
