Roadmap for peace is dead: Ariel Sharon

Wednesday, 28 April , 2004, 04:51

Jerusalem: Two Hamas gunmen were killed by Israeli troops, as Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon used the 56th anniversary of the Jewish state to insist Tuesday that the "roadmap" peace plan is dead.

The two members of the Palestinian Islamist group's military wing were shot dead as they thrust into the Tulkarem refugee camp in the northern West Bank, security sources on both sides said.

At least four other Palestinians were wounded in clashes, one of whom was snatched from his hospital bed by Israeli troops shortly afterwards, Palestinian security sources said. The army denied it entered the hospital.

An army spokesman said the two Palestinians killed were militants from the Hamas armed wing, Ezzedin al-Qassam Brigades, who were shot dead as they tried to attack soldiers.

The latest deaths brought to 30 the number of Palestinians killed in military operations over the past week, as Israel still feared retribution for the assassinations of two successive Hamas leaders in Gaza in a month.

But in an interview to mark the 56th anniversary of the state, Sharon announced that the internationally backed "roadmap" peace blueprint that sought to create an independent Palestinian state by 2005 was dead.
