How were WE going to stop it? This was a dispute between two countries, neither of which we really liked (although, we distinctly disliked one more than the other).

Our government never ENCOURAGED Saddam to go after Iran. We just stood back and watched it happen, while France & the Soviet Union provided arms to Iraq.
