If the inability to comprehend quantum mechanics dooms one, I daresay that a lot more of us are doomed than I'd heretofore realized. What I was clearly referring to was that Western society encourages progress, and has since the Renaissance. I don't think anyone can objectively look at Islamists and say they want a society receptive to the kind of progress we have come to take for granted. That's really why they not so sadly have no future, unlike China for example. But they can deliver a serious sucker punch or two on their way to obscurity, and it should worry us all, as remote as it seems.
