Arrrgh, there ought to be a law against such grand larceny. > Blaming the Chief Engineer because the drunk Captain runs a super-tanker onto the rocks is hardly cricket old chap. The engineers do what they can to keep things functioning and make recommendations, but the politicians are the ones doing the spending, at the behest of the electorate, which shows no sign of electing libertarian politicians, though we have a few in New Zealand's parliament at present, albeit without any control on the spending which is conducting by the witches' coven running the show. But you make a good point. Some years ago, I realized that "Conservatives" are actually much more profligate, in some ways, than the "Labour" lefties, which is counterintuitive when one thinks that the lefties are supposed to be the Big Government spendthrifts. I think, having watched the Act people spend party funds, that the right wingers are generally richer than the left wingers and those running the show in the right wing tend to be richer still. Rich people spend money and lots of it. They stay in expensive hotels, buy flash cars and generally think the world owes them a living, which it does, literally. But they think what they are doing is normal, because their friends are doing that too. On the other hand, the left wingers don't have much money or their own to spend and they know the world doesn't owe them a living, though they think they might be able to get it to by taking over the government, which is where they get it wrong. Once they have control, they blow umpty $billions on stupid ideas. The right wingers blow even more by thinking money is their birthright to spend. When electorates figure out that Big Brother, Big Government, Big Spenders and Big Socialists are not working in their interests, they'll finally select libertarian politicians and the USA will be renamed USU, United States of Utopia - dream on Mq. What you'll really see is continued dribbling from both sides of his mouth as King George II harangues China about human rights [snicker] while his troops conduct obscenities on their prisoners and other victims. Actually, we don't hear much from the USA about human rights in China these days. What with Guantanamo Bay and so on, habeas corpus is obviously not top of the pops with Rumsfeld and co, though the Supreme Court is lumbering into gear, and is considering that perhaps the cash flow to the legal guild should be extended to all corners of Earth, including leased land in Cuba. Between the Big Government lefties and the Big Spender righties, our great and estimable heroic idol, Uncle Al KBE doesn't have much of a chance, though he works valiantly to keep the US$ on the straight and narrow, maintaining its pre-eminent position as the world's biggest money system.
