You have to label me "liberal" and then defend a course of the evolution of rights and liberties in this country that was secured over the opposition of the conservatives of the day. So I guess you are "liberal" too, but only retroactively.

I didn't label you a liberal.. I labeled you a "flip-flopper" on the issues. First you say we're imposing democracy, then you say we're not.

I love my country as much as you do, but I don't believe that any of it's course was preordained, and we are not going to "uncage" the democratic instinct by launching illegitimate wars in the Middle East.

The war may be illegitimate in your opinion, but the US has not been sanctioned as some country that violated international law by enforcing binding UN resolutions.

What was illegitimate was the role France, Germany, and Russia played in PREVENTING the enforcement of those binding resolutions.. All at the same time they were taking payoffs in Iraqi oil from Saddam.

And no war to overthrow a despotic regime can be construed as "illegitimate" on a moral basis. By their very nature, these regimes are nothing more than criminal enterprises and usurpers of the rights of the people living within those countries. Their very existence as despots and tyrants is illegitimate.

The question is whether we have sufficient legitimacy within the context of international law to warrant the initiation of hostilities to achieve such an overthrow..

And in the case of Iraq, whether we discovered hidden WMDs or not, we had the legitimacy to enforce those binding resolutions.

In fact, we had the OBLIGATION to do so as members of the UNSC, and the United Nations as a whole.

Finally, you identify the "real threat" Islamo-Fascist militants waiting to pounce. We don't need any rationale, strategy, or morality to fight them. We just need to launch the crusade

Well, you go wage your crusade.. I'm just trying to defend against THEIR JIHAD...

Bin Laden declared war on the US in 1996... He ordered Jihad to be waged against us..

But it took us until 9/11 to acknowledge this state of war with Islamic militancy.

And for some people like you, it will take a lifetime to acknowledge that they want to kill every one of us..
