Amy, consider the source. The GM CEO is obviously under a lot of pressure to reduce the gas consumption in the vehicle GM makes. But instead of taking responsibility, the CEO instead passes it on to government, saying that they are responsible for taxing gas, while GM is responsible to the demands of their customers. Of course, why shouldn't government be responsible to their constituents, who usually oppose higher taxes, especially on gas? It's hypocritical.

Americans are addicted to oil. Taxes reduce consumption.

I agree, but implementing such a tax would be a political nightmare, given that most Americans consider automobile travel to be a constitutionally-guaranteed right. Plus it can be argued that such a tax might be regressive, which goes against the liberal mantra.
