"Western corps do not want to pay extra for labor, and Chinese govt for its part has never cared about its own people." Unlike the Western gov'ts who are ALWAYS looking out for the average person. Take investors for example, gov't is always stepping in and protecting them at the expense of the big financial houses, sending the criminals to jail, enacting laws to protect investors, etc. LOL. China may still be in the 'exploit the worker stage', but there is just as much explotation of people here, just in a more advanced form.

It is very easy to say it is the government's responsibility to enforce labor rights, but is difficult in practice, especially in the current stage when China is transforming its system from planning economy to market economy, with such a huge population, very limited natural resources. Under the circumstances, China, by any standard, has already done a pretty good job up till now. And don't tell me that the western capitalist society treated their workers good in early stage, because it did not. And China now is in that early stage. Now talk about whether Chinese gov. has ever cared about its people. It might be a surprise for most of you, Chinese gov. under Mao Zedong cared a lot about Chinese people! And that is exactly why so many poor people miss him so much. Having said that I agree that the Chinese gov. under Deng, Jiang, and Zhu, cares more about letting a few people getting rich and high GDP growth rate than it cares about people. Now Wen and Hu is trying their best to make some adjustment. But there are a lot of problems in China, so those who really concern about China have to be patient.
